Rhenus to test hydrogen truck

[ November 21, 2025   //   ]

Rhenus Logistics has been selected as one of five partners to take part in the second phase of Daimler Truck’s customer liquid hydrogen fuel-cell truck trials.

The forwarder, with Hombach, Reber Logistik, Teva Germany/Ratiopharm and DHL Supply Chain, will each use a Mercedes-Benz GenH2 truck on delivery routes across Germany for 12 months in real-world conditions.

Operational data will be gathered to evaluate new route profiles across industries ranging from temperature-controlled pharmaceutical vehicles to general cargo in international long-distance transport, as well as feeding into new vehicle development.

The move follows the completion of the first year of testing with GenH2 trucks operated by Amazon, Air Products, Holcim, Ineos Inovyn and Wiedmann & Winz, covering more than 225,000 kilometres in customer operations respectively.

Each GenH2 vehicle is equipped with a 300-kW fuel cell system, with a gross vehicle weight of 40 tonnes and a payload of approximately 25 tonnes. Trucks will refuel exclusively at the liquid hydrogen stations in Wörth and Duisburg

When the trial programme ends, Daimler Truck will begin small-series production of 100 GenH2 vehicles at its Wörth plant from late 2026, with full industrial-scale production planned for the early 2030s.

Rhenus will use the trial period to gauge the suitability of hydrogen fuel-cell technology across its logistics network, in addition to supporting the sector’s wider transition toward low-emission transport solutions.
