Rotterdam tonnage down but containers rise

[ April 18, 2024   //   ]

Total throughput at the port of Rotterdam fell by 1.4% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, to 110.1 million tonnes compared to 111.7mt in the first quarter of 2023. The decline was mainly due to lower throughput of coal, crude oil and oil products. But container traffic increased by 3.3% , from 31.5mt to 32.5mt and by 2.0% in TEUs, to 3.3 million TEU. The situation in the Red Sea resulted in significantly fewer ships (24.5%) and less volume from Asia (-13.7%) in January and February due to delays and missed sailings.
