Russell set to build rail hub on former steelworks site

[ November 23, 2020   //   ]

Intermodal operator Russell Group has applied for planning permission to build a railhead and logistics hub at Ravenscraig, on the site of the former steelworks.
The £200m scheme would create 200 jobs at the site, which would also become the group’s headquarters. The site would also include a training academy.

A proposal of application notice was due to be submitted to North Lanarkshire Council in late November.
If approved, construction would begin towards the end of 2021 with the first phase of the development completed by early 2023 and with further phases being added until early 2026.
Ravenscraig Ltd is a joint venture comprising Scottish Enterprise, Wilson Bowden Developments and Tata Steel, has been set up to redevelop the 376-hectare site, which was once one of the largest steel plants in Europe. A masterplan to transform the site, was approved by the council last year.
