Second Holyhead berth set for 1 July reopening

[ February 17, 2025   //   ]

Stena Line says that the second of two berths damaged by Storm Darragh on 7 December will provisionally reopen on 1 July. It follows the total closure of the key gateway to Ireland, following which a single berth was reinstated on 16 January. Ferry operators Stena and Irish Ferries have been operating a slightly reduced service with tighter turnrounds since that date.

The line said: “Planning is now underway for the necessary repairs and restoration of the Terminal 3 ferry berth, with the current estimate for reopening set for 1 July 2025. Work is progressing to ensure that the berth is returned to full operational capabilities as safely and efficiently as possible. Looking ahead, we remain committed to the long-term resilience of Holyhead Port and ensuring its sustainable future.”

The news was cautiously welcomed by The Irish Exporters Association , whose chief executive, Simon McKeever, commented: “It provides a certain degree of certainty for exporters and will help companies with schedule planning over the coming months. However, the current berthing situation means shorter turnaround times for ferry operators, resulting in restricted freight capacity.

“We expect the situation to become more challenging when the traditional busy spring and early summer season begins. We will continue to engage with all stakeholders, particularly with the Irish and Welsh Governments, to minimise the impact of the ongoing disruption and to ensure the long- term resilience of Holyhead port.”
