Second Sweden-Denmark bridge is on the cards

[ October 26, 2022   //   ]

The City of Helsingborg has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to examine how the private sector would build a fixed road and rail link between Helsingborg and the Danish city of Helsingør, about 4km across the Øresund Strait.

There is already a road and rail bridge-tunnel between the two countries, linking Malmo (Sweden) and the Danish capital, Copenhagen, to the south. However, a Helsingborg/Helsingør bridge would shorten the journey to many locations in Sweden, including the major city and port of Gothenburg.

An RFI is a formalised way for the City of Helsingborg to ask private sector actors about their interest in the project and what they can offer to move forward with plans to build the link.

Helsingborg municipal commissioner Christian Orsing said: “We are doing this because we are convinced there is considerable business interest in the project. We also believe the process itself can provide relevant knowledge of how the project can be carried out quicker, more efficiently and at a considerably lower cost.”

The RFI asks how business can help build the link but is not a formal procurement and is not binding on any party.

Fellow municipal commissioner Jan Björklund added: “We hope the participants can provide innovative solutions, especially for reducing the climate footprint usually associated with such an infrastructure investment.”

The answers will complement a joint strategic analysis previously conducted by Swedish and Danish government agencies and form the basis for a final decision on how a permanent link will be built, after the Swedish Transport Administration has conducted its in-depth study.
