Solent Stevedores completes second stage of rail upgrade

[ November 13, 2023   //   ]

A multi-million-pound project to expand the rail terminal at the Port of Southampton has completed its second phase.

Solent Stevedores has taken possession of the second phase of the upgrade programme at its rail terminal in the port’s Western Docks,

A further 6.5 acres of space has been connected to the existing rail terminal, a new track has been laid and new offices completed. This phase has also included realignment of the existing rails creating two container sidings capable of servicing 640 metre trains and increasing the number of daily departure slots to 12.

The £17.5 million investment, in partnership with ABP, is now moving into its third and final stage and is due for completion in early 2024 when the new 18-acre facility will give shipping lines access to intermodal rail transport with laden and empty container handling, storage, maintenance, and repair within a single site boundary – a first for the Port of Southampton.
