South Coast needs a fair wind, says union

[ December 17, 2020   //   ]

The GMB trade union has called for employers and further education providers to lobby for wind turbines fabrication jobs on the South Coast. It says that areas such as Chatham, Thanet, Portsmouth, Southampton, Poole and Weymouth should get investment to be in the supply chain for the additional 2,700 giant wind turbines and jackets needed.

GMB Southern, which represents metal fabrication workers, is calling for coastal locations in the region to be chosen for the new facilities required to realise government plans, announced on 14 December, for 30GW of electricity to be generated by wind farms by 2035.

Areas with links to the maritime sector like Chatham, Thamet, Portsmouth, Southampton, Poole and Weymouth have a history of fabrication and maintenance of ships and other offshore facilities, it points out.
