Stena cuts steel on Heysham ferries

[ January 10, 2024   //   ]

Stena Line has cut the first steel on NewMax hybrid ferries in Weihai, China. The vessels have been ordered for its Heysham to Belfast route, with the first due to enter service in autumn 2025. They are of a unique design with the most efficient hull form to maximise freight volumes and their addition to the route will boost freight capacity by 80% compared to current ship capacity and will be able to operate on methanol fuel.

Last year, Stena Line signed a deal with Peel Ports Group to operate from Heysham Port for the next 77 years until 2100. Peel Ports will invest in new terminal management and a ‘smart gate’ automatic check-in system and will increase trailer parking to accommodate the additional capacity of the new vessels. It is also planning additional electrical capacity to use green shore power in future.
