The freight train gets smart

[ December 10, 2021   //   ]

TX Logistik and Mercitalia Intermodal have launched a 15-month smart freight train pilot project to test the use of sensors and communication technologies in Combined Transport. Several freight wagons on commercial services operated by TX Logistik will be used to determine how digital technology can best be integrated into operations and how processes can be further improved.

Sensors and communication technologies will be provided by different manufacturers, in particular Nexxiot and PJM. For example, the sensors monitor the condition of the braking system during the journey and record the mileage determining the exact location at any time. The data collected will also be used for predictive maintenance and operational efficiency.

Results of the tests are expected in spring 2023.
