There’s no escape – even beneath the sea

Eurotunnel customers – including truck drivers on the freight shuttles – can now use their mobile phone or tablet device anywhere in the Channel Tunnel. It follows a ten-year deal signed by the tunnel company with mobile telephone operators EE and Vodafone. Truck telematic systems set up to work through 3G mobile networks should also work, adding an extra level of monitoring and precision to the logistics operators, said Eurotunnel spokesman John Keefe.

The quality of communication will be equivalent to a call made above ground, says Eurotunnel.

Currently, customers of both operators will have access to 2G and 3G services in the UK to France tunnel but both EE and Vodafone intend to offer 4G data services throughout the tunnel in the future.
