Tours to mark Windrush Day in Tilbury

The Tilbury on the Thames Trust and the Port of Tilbury are welcoming the local community to tour the listed Tilbury Riverside Railway Station to mark National Windrush Day 2026.

The building is currently undergoing a multimillion pound restoration by the Trust, part funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It is due to open to the public later in 2027, in time to celebrate Windrush80 in 2028.

It was 78 years ago on 22 June 1948 that Tilbury and its railway station welcomed the passengers from the Empire Windrush after a long voyage from the Caribbean, to start a new life in Britain.
