Transpennine rail route is full, says Peel Ports boss

[ June 30, 2015   //   ]

Peel Ports managing director Gary Hodgson told the All-Party Parliamentary Maritime and Ports Group session on 30 June that he was bitterly disappointed at Network Rail’s announcement the previous week that electrification of the Transpennine rail route between Liverpool and Leeds had been put on hold.
New capacity on the railways was badly needed and already east-west connectivity was “a tragedy” he said. “There is zero capacity left across to the east coast, he told the group.
Network Rail’s investment needed to be sorted quickly if the grandiose Northern Powerhouse project was to succeed, he added.
