Treading in the footsteps of the Windrush pioneers

[ June 22, 2021   //   ]

Port of Tilbury and the Tilbury on the Thames Trust held their annual celebration of National Windrush Day on 22 June. The Trust and the port invited 300 local school children to the London Cruise Terminal to the mark the day, 73 years ago, when the SS Empire Windrush arrived from the West Indies crammed with hopefuls eager to start a new life in the Mother Country.

The bridge where many Windrush pioneers would have taken their first walk on British soil has been turned into an art installation by Eve Wright, an Essex-based artist, with 130 images and 35 audio recordings telling the story.
