The Port of Tyne says it achieved its highest cargo volumes in over 20 years in 2012, at 6.5m tonnes, and up 22% growth on 2011. Traffic was boosted by an investment programme which has included £5m in deepening berths and the river channel, giving the port the capacity to handle full panamax-sized ships. The number of cars handled through the equalled the 2011 record of 667,000 units, helped by a strong transhipment performance which saw an increase of 65,000 cars in the year.
