Tyne wins 5G grant

[ March 19, 2024   //   ]

South Tyneside Council has awarded the Port of Tyne, a £1.159million contract to launch 5G-enabled ‘smart port’ operations.

It will form part of Tyne’s plan to evolve into a 5G-enabled port, and forms part of The Department for Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT) ‘5G Innovation Regions (5GIR)’ £37M grant, of which the seven North East local authorities (LA7) successfully bid to receive over £3.7million to support this and three other 5G and advanced wireless connectivity projects across the North East.

The 5G Port of Tyne project will demonstrate how better digital connectivity can help to drive growth and will involve 5G cameras and IoT sensors to inspect the port estate.
