Ulster-US air link axed

[ November 7, 2016   //   ]

United Airlines is to halt its Belfast-New York services from 9 Janaury after a subsidy plan was scuppered by the European Union.

The Northern Ireland Executive had put in place a grant aid plan for the loss-making route, which is Northern Ireland’s only direct link with the US, in contrast with Eire which has daily flights to a number of US cities.

However, the executive has been warned by the Commission that the subsidy breached its state aid rules, forcing it to repay the cash that had already been granted to the carrier.
