Unifeeder gives Indian islanders medical lifeline

DP World’s short-sea arm Unifeeder has partnered with Kerala-based NGO Plan@Earth to launch a hybrid marine ambulance and dispensary for islanders in south-west India.

The boat will provide outpatient consultations, emergency care and essential medication to over 17,000 residents of 14 remote islands in Kadamakkudy Panchayath with limited or no road access.

The hybrid boat is powered by a 40HP electric/solar engine, and comes complete with a consultation room, laboratory, mobile pharmacy, defibrillator, suction unit and oxygen supply. Medical services are provided by a four-member team The initiative is part of the Indian Government’s National Rural Health Mission which aims to provide accessible, affordable, and quality health care.
