US East Coast port strike averted
[ January 9, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]A US East Coast ports strike in mid-January appears to have been averted as the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance were reported on 9 January to have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year contract.
Details of the agreement are not being released publicly to allow officials on both sides to approve the details. Meanwhile both parties will work under their pre-existing contracts until the deal is ratified.
Negotiations on wages and an agreement on the use of automated handling equipment in ports have been ongoing for the past eight months, with a brief stoppage taking place in early October.
