Waterways could play key role, says Logistics UK

[ June 18, 2025   //   ]

Inland and coastal waterways should be core components of modern multimodal transport and expanding their use can reduce road congestion, lower emissions, improve air quality and enhance regional connectivity, according to a new Logistics UK report. “The UK Logistics Network: Waterborne Freight”, launched at Multimodal on 18 June, highlights the scale and distribution of waterborne freight flows and emphasise the critical role maritime transport.

It adds that planning reform is also essential to enable water freight growth warning that, too often, vital wharf sites are lost to residential development without recognition of their strategic value to the economy. The report identifies examples of local and regional projects – the Port of Leeds at Stourton and the Manchester Ship Canal, including the development of Port Salford.
