Workers step up Black Sea action

[ May 27, 2014   //   ]

The International Transport Workers’ Federation has launched a week of action against what it describes as ‘the Sea of Shame’. It says that there are still “shocking levels of crew abuse and unseaworthy vessels” on the Black Sea, two years after unions started an intensive campaign to expose them, and it remains one of the most dangerous places on earth to be a seafarer.

Joint teams of ITF inspectors and union activists in Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine will inspect ships, inform seafarers of their rights and highlight the need for drastic action by littoral state governments.
