‘Ugly freight could lose out from FedEx takeover’

[ May 24, 2016   //   ]

FedEx’s take-over of TNT Express could mean less choice and increased costs and transit times for shippers of large and heavy items, warns David Jinks, head of consumer research at brokers ParcelHero.

He says that TNT has made ‘ugly freight’ a speciality “and has significantly greater flexibility on the size of packages it accepts, operating bigger vehicles than other carriers, generally with tail lifts capable of loading pallets and heavy parcels.

FedEx, however, has “no culture of supporting ugly freight to any extent. If TNT Express is steered away from such items once they become a part of FedEx – and it’s undeniable that they do require more investment and expertise – the loss of these services would be keenly felt.”

Jinks points out that last year TNT opened a Sydney ‘superhub’ capable of sorting outsize objects over 1.5 metres in size or 30kg in weight. He concludes: “Large and heavy items are frequently shipped through ParcelHero’s parcel broker service and we would hate to see the loss of TNT Express’ unique and cost-effective approach to this part of the delivery market.”
