Hapag-Lloyd completes newbuild programme
[ October 29, 2025 // Chris Lewis ]Hapag-Lloyd celebrated the naming of the Wilhelmshaven Express and completion of its 24,000TEU newbuild programme on 28 Octoberat the Jade Weser Port.
She is the 12th and final ship in the Hamburg Express class, an ultra-large vessel series with a capacity of 23,660 TEU and dual-fuel propulsion, able to run on LNG or methane. The vessel is deployed on the Gemini Cooperation’s NE1 service between Asia and Northern Europe.
Hapag-Lloyd is now preparing for its next major newbuild programme – 12 ships with a capacity of 16,800TEU and 12 of 9,200TEU all equipped low emission high pressure liquefied gas dual-fuel engines These vessels can be operated on biomethane, which can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional propulsion systems. Hapag-Lloyd will take delivery of the new vessels between 2027 and 2029.
