CLdN to build new Irish Sea terminal in Liverpool

[ September 15, 2025   //   ]

Short-sea shipping line CLdN has announced plans to develop a ro ro river berth in Liverpool in collaboration with Peel Ports Group for the Irish Sea market.

The multi-million-pound scheme was unveiled at a Ministerial Maritime Regional Investment Roundtable organised by the UK Department for Transport and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority as part of London International Shipping Week.

The investment would involve construction of a lock-free berth on the river Mersey next to CLdN’s existing facilities at Brocklebank/Langton Dock and would allow bigger ships to berth compared with the current terminal.

CldN plas to submit formal application for consent would in the second half of 2026 with construction starting in early 2028.

CLdN recently completed a major investment programme at its existing Brocklebank Dock facility, expanding capacity and enabling the use of the terminal by larger vessels on CLdN’s Liverpool-Dublin route.  The service currently carries over 200.000 freight units a year.

CLdN chief executive, Florent Maes, said: “This investment would bring significant additional benefits to customers on CLdN’s Liverpool-Dublin route. The position of the berth would provide increased operational flexibility and efficiency and would also enable a further reduction in the carbon footprint of each freight unit. The project underscores CLdN’s long term commitment to developing its port infrastructure and to providing essential freight services between Great Britain and Ireland. We look forward to working with our partners at Peel Ports Group to bring this project to fruition.”

Peel Ports Group chief executive, Claudio Veritiero, added: “As a leading port operator, our

role is to facilitate projects that drive regional growth — strengthening the economy, expanding trade opportunities, and creating skilled jobs.

“CLdN’s significant investment represents a strong vote of confidence in the capability and the long

term sustainable growth of the Port of Liverpool. Together with CLdN, we are committed to delivering this transformative project, which will enhance supply chain efficiency, cut carbon emissions, and secure lasting benefits for the region and beyond.”
