Fire breaks out on Hapag Lloyd ship

[ January 4, 2019   //   ]

Fire broke out in a deck container on board Hapag Lloyd’s 7,510teu Yantian Express 650 miles off the coast of Canada while en route from Colombo to Halifax on 3 January. The crew of were reported unharmed, but efforts to extinguish the fire had to be suspended for the time being due to poor weather conditions. The line said it was too early to make a precise estimate of any damage to the vessel or its cargo.
Hapag-Lloyd has been a major driving force behind the Container Incident Notification System (CINS) to try and prevent misdeclared dangerous goods from being loaded on board vessels.
The incident occurred barely a day after 270 boxes, including some containing dangerous goods, were washed away from MSC’s Zoe, off the Dutch-German coast and washed up on nearby beaches.
