Intermarine to join shipping heavy hitters

[ February 28, 2024   //   ]

US-based  multipurpose and liner operator Intermarine is to join JSI Alliance, the joint venture set up by Dutch maritime heavy lift transport and engineering contractor Jumbo Shipping and German breakbulk and project cargo specialist SAL Heavy Lift three years ago.

It will give JSI Alliance a combined fleet of 50 vessels.

The three partners will combine their fleets and commercial activities for breakbulk and project cargo, with unified sales and marketing for their joint network of offices and agents in 23 countries.

The fleet ranges from multipurpose vessels to what JSI describes as the most advanced heavy lift ships in the world, with a lifting capacity of up to 3,000 tonnes and aims to create a one-stop shop.

JSI Alliance offers semi-liner and liner services as well as customised project shipping. It provides solutions for small parcels and single cargo items as well as complex industrial cargo.

JSI says that while the Jumbo and SAL services and fleets are highly complementary, Intermarine services and ships are somewhat different and expand the scope. Its fleet is based on standardised multipurpose vessels with gear typically able to lift up to 500 tonnes, essentially where the Jumbo and SAL vessel portfolio begins. Furthermore, Intermarine operates a mix of owned and time-chartered vessels, both on a short- or long-term basis. While the owned fleet typically takes on complex cargo operations, volume cargo and vessel positions may require a different approach. Its flexible commercial solutions will held JSI Alliance achieve its goal of being a one-stop shop, it says.

JSI Alliance replaces Jumbo-SAL-Alliance as the marketing platform and brand. However, as operators and owners, Jumbo, SAL and Intermarine remain independent.
