The Department for Transport has introduced a Road Transport Security Standards (RTSS) initiative to bolster the security of the sector to help operators safeguard their vehicles, personnel, and cargo against organised crime and terrorism.

It says that incidents in cities like Munich and New Orleans have highlighted how commercial vehicles can be used in the planning or execution of attacks. The RTSS aims to mitigate these risks by encouraging operators to adopt a proactive security process.

It encourages operators to take a closer look at how vehicles are secured, how staff are trained, and how security risks are assessed and managed.

It offers a practical toolkit with actionable guidance on improving vehicle and site security, a self-assessment form to help evaluate current security practices and best practice guidance with links to resources and standards, including PAS 29000:2021, which outlines how to prevent commercial

The RTSS encourages a company-wide approach to security, promoting awareness and accountability at all levels and, by completing the RTSS survey, operators receive tailored feedback from the DfT’s Road Transport Security Team, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.

RTSS practices can demonstrate a commitment to safety and security, which is increasingly valued by clients, insurers, and regulators.

The RTSS Toolkit is available free on the Gov.UK website.
