Temporary imports – views wanted

[ August 14, 2023   //   ]

Freight forwarders and hauliers who help to temporarily bring items into the UK for exhibitions and shows are being asked for their views on how easy it is to do.

Goods and equipment imported into the UK for a short period of time for events such as conferences, exhibitions, stage shows, sporting competitions, and music concerts can use the Temporary Admission (TA) procedure without paying customs duty or import VAT.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) wants to hear from the sectors that use the TA process as part of a Call for Evidence (CfE) to help further streamline the process.

The government says it has reduced burdens on businesses using TA. For example, in January 2021 the need to provide a financial security for most businesses using TA with prior authorisation was removed.

HMRC wants to gather a wide range of insights from individuals and businesses of all sizes about their experience using the system, as well as those supporting importers, including customs agents and freight forwarders.

HMRC’s deputy director for customs policy and strategy, Sally Beggs, said: “Some importers tell us that using TA could be easier and we want to gain a deeper understanding of these issues. We want to improve TA to make it as simple and straightforward as possible while ensuring they cannot be abused to undercut our domestic producers.”

The CfE is seeking views on any barriers to using TA and their impact, friction points in the current process and how the procedure can better facilitate importing at the border.

The consultation will run until 22 September 2023. It can be viewed in full at Bringing goods into the UK temporarily – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and participants can provide feedback by emailing tacustomscallforevidence@hmrc.gov.uk
