UK government moves to solve Irish border conundrum

[ October 5, 2018   //   ]

The UK government has made a new proposal that includes keeping the UK in the EU customs union “indefinitely” to help unblock Brexit negotiations solve the Irish border issue, reports EUObserver.

Under the plan, the whole of the UK would remain in the customs union a framework on the future relationship is introduced after 2020 when a Brexit transition period ends.

The proposal may also include some regulatory alignment for Northern Ireland with the EU’s rules – essentially similar checks for agri goods to those that already exist between Northern Ireland and mainland UK, according to EUobserver.

However, it remains to be seen whether the plan would be acceptable to Ulster Unionist politicians or the EU.
