UK ‘will face barriers’ if it leaves customs union, warns Barnier

The EU’s chief negotiator in the Brexit negotiations Michel Barnier has warned that the UK will face trade barriers to trade if it leaves the customs union and single market. His remarks came at a meeting with Brexit secretary David Davis and the prime minister Theresa May at Downing Street on 5 February.

David Davis said however that the UK the freedom to strike its own trade deals with third countries. However, he said that there could be a transitional phase that could last from 18 months to two years, and that agreement on this could be reached before the end of March.
