Wales delays SPS checks

[ December 22, 2022   //   ]

The Welsh Government has decided to postpone plans to introduce pre-notification for certain sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) goods products imported to Wales from the Republic of Ireland. It follows  concerns by stakeholders over the available time before 1 January 2023 to prepare, said Minister for Economy, Vaughan Gething.

Introduction of prenotification will now take place until later in 2023, with the date to be confirmed as soon as possible in the New Year to give plenty of notice to businesses of any future changes, he said.

The UK Government announced a review of border controls in April 2022, and plans to publish a draft Target Operating Model in autumn 2022 for implementation by the end of 2023. Although aspects of the border regime are devolved, Welsh Government would prefer to see coherent and consistent rules and the Target Operating Model has not yet been finalised and agreed by ministers.
