XPO offers ‘green’ Spain-Liverpool option

[ July 14, 2023   //   ]

US-owned logistics company XPO is offering a multimodal route between Santander and Liverpool, based on the ro ro service via Dublin introduced by CldN last year.

XPO will offer two weekly departures and says the routing will save more than 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per trip per year compared with the 1,800km road route between the two ports.

Once the goods arrive at the Port of Liverpool, XPO´s UK team manages the final delivery by road. The fleet used is GPS-equipped for traceability throughout the journey, confirmation of the arrival of the goods at each port, and final delivery through the Drive XPO system.

Shortsea carrier CLdN announced a twice weekly schedule from Santander to Dublin in January with transhipment via adjacent terminals in Dublin onto the regular Seatruck Ferries service to Liverpool. If followed CLdN’s earlier acquisition of Irish Sea oprator Seatrick Ferries.

XPO’s managing director – Southern Europe and Morocco, Massimo Marsili, said: “Our new multimodal transport solution between Santander and Liverpool reflects our strong commitment to providing our customers with more freight capacity while keeping sustainability and innovation at the forefront. Reducing the carbon footprint of our daily operations is in the roadmap for both our customers and XPO, and multimodal transportation is an efficient alternative to the road to help achieve this goal.”

XPO adds that the companies it serves are increasingly looking for alternative transport and logistics solutions that meet their sustainability goals while still being competitive economically.

The route between Santander and Liverpool is one of the new multimodal corridors that XPO has recently launched, connecting the Iberian Peninsula with France, Germany, and the Benelux countries.
